Being Canon there is no corners cut anywhere; the PSS100 has an ultra wide f/2.0, 5 x optical zoom lens providing you with a range equivalent in 35mm film terms to a 24mm-120mm lens, and to help you improve your shots the S100 has an Intelligent optical image stabilizer, intelligent in that it has 7 modes that the camera will choose from to make sure your images are as clear & sharp as is possible in all sorts of situations ranging from low light without flash to maximum zoom even when you are unable to steady yourself.
Plus to process those results the PSS100 has the DIGIC 5 with iSAPS image processor which employed with the Canon HS system allows you to record with low noise even in low light without the need of flash or a tripod.
Camera knows best or you know best
The PSS100 has Smart Auto with multi area WB, 32 scenes (21 movie) enabling the camera to select the best settings to give you the best results, plus when Smart Auto is being used, the multi area WB will give you the best results when you are in a situation with a mixed light source, e.g. daylight, tungsten or fluorescent light together..
However, either from previous knowledge or just to learn by experimentation, you can take full control with aperture priority, shutter priority or full manual modes letting you make the decisions giving you exactly the results you want and this could be not be easier to do than with the Lens control ring.
The PowerShot S100 can even shoot in RAW format, and then using Canon Digital Photo Professional you can with great ease make colour correction, adjust white balance, change exposure, optimise contrast and alter the noise reduction as if the shot had been originally taken using those settings.
